Update: On Tuesday, State Police confirmed the accident involved only one vehicle. A tractor-trailer next to the vehicle was not involved in the crash.

Update: 3 in critical condition following Monday’s accident.

UNION TWP. – A serious accident involving one vehicle closed both sides of Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County Monday afternoon.

The accident was first reported shortly after 6 p.m. Westbound traffic is backed up 7 miles and eastbound traffic is backed up about 4 miles. There are also significant delays on Routes 31 and 173 as vehicles exit the expressway.

The accident happened on the westbound side of Interstate 78 near exit 13 (Route 173), according to the state Department of Transportation. As of 7:30 p.m., the left lane on both the eastbound and westbound side of Interstate 78 near exit 13 were closed, with delays of up to an hour in both directions.

State Police were not available for comment on the accident as of 7 p.m., but those on the scene say three medevac helicopters landed on Interstate 78. Five people were injured in the crash.

There are a number of fire trucks and ambulances on the scene as well.
