UPDATE: Elderly man confirmed killed in Interstate 287 accident.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP – Several lanes on the northbound side of Interstate 287 have been closed following an accident involving a pedestrian, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The accident has closed the right and center lanes on the northbound side near exit 12, leaving only the left lane open to traffic.

Delays into Piscataway of up to 5 miles are being reported on the northbound side, and traffic is slow on the southbound side to the Route 28 interchange at the border of Somerville and Bound Brook.

The DOT is reporting there are delays of up to an hour in the area and is advising drivers to seek an alternate route.
