Car ran off highway near Rockaway Townsquare mall

A Dover man died from injuries sustained in a car crash that briefly shut down Route 80 in both directions Sunday afternoon in Rockaway Township, State Police said.

Joshua Rivas, 21, was airlifted from the scene to Morristown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m., according to Trooper Lawrence Peele.

The driver, Lisandro Lorenzo, 20, also of Dover, was taken by ambulance to Morristown Medical Center with moderate injuries. His condition was unknown on Monday afternoon.

According to Peele, police responded at 2:50 p.m. for a report of an accident on westbound Route 80 at mile marker 35.7, near the exit for Mount Hope Road and Rockaway Townsquare mall. The preliminary investigation determined the Hyundai Genesis being driven by Lorenzo with Rivas as a passenger, ran off the right side of the highway and struck multiple trees.

All east and westbound lanes of the highway were closed for about 25 minutes to clear it for the landing of the Atlantic Air One Medevac helicopter, Peele said. The two right lanes of westbound Route 80 were closed for about 2 1/2 hours during the emergency response.

Rockaway Township fire and EMS crews also responded to the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, Peele said.
