A crash closed Route 3 eastbound in East Rutherford, July 14, 2015
EAST RUTHERFORD — A Jersey City man was airlifted to the hospital Tuesday morning after his car flipped over a guard rail on Route 3, police said.
The 19-year-old was driving westbound near MetLife Stadium at about 6:30 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, East Rutherford Police Deputy Chief Ed Bury said.
The driver lost control, drove onto the grass median and struck a guard rail, Bury said. It’s not clear why he lost control.
After striking the guard rail, his Toyota Camry flipped over into eastbound traffic and struck another car, causing a chain reaction crash, Bury said. Five vehicles, including the Camry, a tractor trailer, a pickup truck and a box truck were ensnared in the crash.
Only the Jersey City man was injured, Bury said. A NorthSTAR helicopter transported him to Hackensack University Medical Center.
His injuries, mainly to his legs, do not appear to be life threatening, Bury said. He was conscious after the crash.
The eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of Route 3 were closed until about 9 a.m.
Police plan to speak to the driver to determine what caused the crash, Bury said.
